Install on Mac

The daemon runs on your Mac. No root.

macOS has no KVM. kindling launches one kling-vz per microVM: it speaks the Firecracker API and uses Virtualization.framework underneath.

What Why
Apple Silicon guests are aarch64
macOS 14 or later freezing uses the VM’s saved state
signed kling-vz no virtualization entitlement, no VM
e2fsprogs ext4 overlays and debugfs
Terminal window
make install && make vz && brew install e2fsprogs
kling up -check
kling image copy min -from ssh://user@linux-arm64-host

Images are built on an arm64 Linux host and brought over with kling image copy.

On the Mac every guest has the same IP. The host reaches them through loopback ports that each kling-vz opens. kling ps shows them:

running 127.0.0.1:61234
  • Each restore costs ~350 MiB: there is no shared golden memory.
  • No image builds, no CPU caps, no jailer.
  • Alternative: Firecracker inside a Linux VM with Lima (M3 or later). See macOS (vz).
