Install on Linux

A host with KVM. One command.

  • Linux amd64 or arm64 with KVM (cpu: host if it is a VM; with nested virtualization if it runs inside another one).
  • firecracker and jailer, e2fsprogs, squashfs-tools, curl, jq.
  • Windows is not supported.
Terminal window
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/juan52878911/kindling/main/scripts/install.sh | sh

The script downloads the release binary and checks its SHA256 before touching the disk.

Terminal window
# with the extensions from the same release
curl -fsSL .../install.sh | sh -s -- --with mcp,sandbox
# a specific version
curl -fsSL .../install.sh | sh -s -- --tag v0.17.0
Terminal window
kling up # checks KVM, nftables, the kindling user, artifacts and images
kling status -v

Output

endpoint: ssh://juan@192.168.2.60
daemon: 0.1.0
root: /var/lib/kindling
KVM: yes
firecracker: Firecracker v1.16.1
machines: 7

kling up prints the commands that need privileges; it does not run them for you.

The same binary is both CLI and daemon. The daemon never listens on a network port: you reach it over SSH.

Terminal window
export KLING_HOST=ssh://juan@192.168.2.60
kling context add lab ssh://juan@192.168.2.60 -description "Proxmox de casa"
kling context use lab

From source: make install (CLI) and make deploy HOST=ssh://… (daemon + systemd unit).
